The Krakoa era of X-Men, spearheaded by Jonathan Hickman.

Also known as the Jonathan Hickman era, this map incorporates every X-series between 2019 and 2024. The spine of this map are the oversized hardcovers collecting the major events, with the custom volumes created from the compendium TPB series (Dawn of X, Reign of X, and Trials of X). In many places, covers share pages with story or text pages from other issues. When I have needed to split those up, I have found cover images and reprinted those, opting not to do any scan-and-prints for actual story pages.

Unfortunately, Marvel ended the compendium trades after “Trials of X”, so I switched to a mix of individual series trades and single issues for the “Destiny of X” era and then single issues for “Fall of X” and beyond.

I heavily referenced the Way of X blog when putting the map together to determine best chronological order, and the “Arguments” section of that site will explain a lot of issue placements. Some issue placements have been determined by how the issues were reprinted in the “… of X” trades to minimize “scan-and-print” efforts.

Secrets of X: Sabretooth
Sabretooth #1-5
Sabretooth and the Exiles #1-5

X Lives/Death of Wolverine is supposed to be the cap of the Reign/Trials era and launch Destiny of X. But there were still a few issues with some lingering threads, including the Sabretooth mini-series that chronicles events covering the entire Krakoa era. These interlude volumes are for issues that fall between the cracks before Destiny of X. Some of the issues were included in Trials of X Volumes 10-12, but many others came from single issues or other TPBs.

Destiny of X volume 1
Immortal X-Men #1-3
Legion of X #1-3
X-Men Red #1-3
Legion of X #4-5
Knights of X #1-5

Since Marvel cancelled the compendium trades, I switched to individual series TPBs to collect this era with a few single issues to round the project out. It also helped that most of the series started getting a lot more self-contained, allowing for chunks of issues to be mapped together.

Destiny of X volume 2
Marvel Voices: Pride (Somnus story)
Marauders Annual #1
Marauders #1-4
X-Men #10-12
X-Men Red #4
Marauders #5
Immortal X-Men #4
A.X.E. Eve of Judgment #1

The Voices story was included at the end of the Marauders TPB (although it takes place first), which is why I ended up including it here. That story does share a story page with the final page of Marauders #5, which marks the only time I did scan-and-print on story pages in this project.

Destiny of X volume 3: Judgment Day
Free Comic Book Day 2022: Avengers/X-Men (first story)
A.X.E. Judgment Day #1
Immortal X-Men #5
X-Men Red #5
A.X.E. Judgment Day #2
A.X.E. Death to the Mutants #1
X-Men #13
A.X.E. Judgment Day #3
X-Men #14
Amazing Spider-Man #10 (904)
Fantastic Four #47-48 (692-693)
A.X.E. Death to the Mutants #2
Immortal X-Men #6
X-Men Red #6
A.X.E. Judgment Day #4
X-Men Red #7
Legion of X #6
Marauders #6
A.X.E. Judgment Day #5
Immortal X-Men #7
A.X.E. Death to the Mutants #3
A.X.E. Starfox #1
A.X.E. Avengers #1
A.X.E. X-Men #1
A.X.E. Eternals #1
A.X.E. Judgment Day #6
A.X.E. Judgment Day Omega

Since this crossover occurred so early in the era, it didn’t make sense to break up “Destiny of X” and use an alternate title for the majority of the volumes in the era. I also didn’t trust Marvel to map the omnibus to my liking.

Destiny of X volume 4
New Mutants #25-33
New Mutants: Lethal Legion #1-5
X-Terminators #1-5

New Mutants #25-28 has to take place before Dark Web and X-Terminators #1-5 has to take place before X-Men #18. Otherwise, there’s probably several options for how to map the issues after Judgment Day.

Destiny of X volume 5
X-Force #30-31
Wolverine #24-25
X-Force #32-33
X-Men Annual #1
X-Men #16-18
Dark Web #1
Dark Web: X-Men #1-3
Dark Web: Dawn #1

The X-Force and Wolverine issues are technically Judgment Day tie-ins, but they span the entire event. I opted to group them together afterwards instead of spacing them out within the Judgment Day volume. As I was putting the map together, I really liked the idea of a volume of side stories (being the New Mutants and X-Terminators issues in volume 4). However, since those stories all needed to come before the X-Men and Dark Web issues, X-Force and Wolverine got pushed to volume 5. None of the other tie-ins to Dark Web are required for the X-Men storyline.

Destiny of X volume 6
Captain Marvel #43-46
X-Men #19-21
Captain Marvel #47-49
Invincible Iron Man #1-6 (651-656)

These Iron Man issues are the beginning of Duggan’s run, which becomes part of Fall of X later on.

Iron Man #7 (657)
Before the Fall: Sinister Four #1
Immortal X-Men #12-13
X-Men #24

Starting with Fall of X, I switched to single issues for binding.

Fall of X volume 1
Free Comic Book Day 2023: Uncanny Avengers (both stories)
Hellfire Gala: Fall of X #1
X-Force #43
X-Men Blue: Origins #1
Uncanny Spider-Man #5
Astonishing Iceman #1-5
Dark X-Men #1-5
Realm of X #1-4

X-Men Blue: Origins #1 actually takes place a few pages before the end of Uncanny Spider-Man #4, and could be easily spliced in (at least with single issues). Look for the page in #4 with “AND THEY DO” in large letters. Most of these issues are side adventures and don’t intersect with the main storyline too much, although the Alpha Flight mini does need to be read before X-Force #47.

Fall of X volume 3
Ghost Rider/Wolverine: Weapons of Vengeance – Alpha
Ghost Rider #17
Wolverine #36
Ghost Rider/Wolverine: Weapons of Vengeance – Omega
X-Force #44-46
Wolverine #37-40
X-Force #47-50
Wolverine #41-50

I’m only including the main story from Wolverine #50 here. The Larry Hama backup is from an earlier era, and the Percy backup will be included as an epilogue in the final volume.

Fall of X volume 4
Uncanny Avengers #1-5
X-Men #26
Iron Man #10-12 (660-662)
X-Men #27-29
X-Men Red #14-18
Cable #1-4

Twilight of X volume 1
Iron Man #13-14 (663-664)
X-Men #30
Fall of the House of X #1
X-Men #31
Avengers #12-13 (778-779)
Iron Man #15-16 (665-666)
Fall of the House of X #2
X-Men #32
Fall of the House of X #3
X-Men #33
Resurrection of Magneto #1-4
Iron Man #17-18 (667-668)

Technically, Avengers #12-13 are supposed to go in the middle of Iron Man #15, but it’s not a good splice. I believe this order is best for pacing. Also, the last few pages of Avengers #13 can be skipped as they take place after the entire event and lead into another Marvel event crossover.

Twilight of X volume 2
Rise of the Powers of X #1
Dead X-Men #1-2
Rise of the Powers of X #2
X-Men #35 (Uncanny X-Men #700 – main story only)
Wolverine #50 (back-up)

There are a few back-up features in Uncanny X-Men #700. Some lead into the next era of X-Men and could be saved for the beginning of the next volume.

For those keeping count, we have 31 volumes in this map (25 custom volumes and 6 oversized hardcovers).

Volume 1: Multiple Issues

Jamie Madrox, stabbed, staggering off a bus. Jamie Madrox, setting up a detective agency in the heart of Mutant Town. Jamie Madrox, a peaceful Shaolin priest. Which is the real Jamie Madrox? Is Jamie his own best friend or worst enemy? In this noir-esque thriller, it’s possible that even Madrox doesn’t know anymore. Then in the fallout from House of M a new mutant team is forged! X-Factor is an investigative mutant agency that includes Madrox, the Multiple Man; Guido, the Strong Guy; Wolfsbane, the were-wolf; Siryn, the chorus girl; Rictor, the living earthquake; and Generation X’s Monet, the pompous witch. Drawn together in the heart of District X, this rag-tag band of heroes has a lot of answers to find, and fast!

I had originally planned on breaking this volume right before Messiah CompleX so you would jump to X-Men bind (Vol 69) to continue to story then come back to volume 2. But it made more sense to just include Messiah CompleX so I added the trade paper back to this bind.

Volume 2: Back and There Again

Following the events of Messiah CompleX, X-Factor Investigations is in shambles. Jamie is a basket case from his trip to a nightmarish future, Layla’s fate is completely in the air, and Wolfsbane has to leave the team to join X-Force – though none of her friends can know about it. What will Wolfsbane tell the X-Factor team? What are they going to do about Layla? How is Jamie coping with his guilt? Get onboard here for X-Factor’s brand-new direction! Plus: He’s gone from the son of one of the world’s greatest villains to one of Earth’s Mightest Heroes and then to one of the world’s greatest villains in his own right. Now, Pietro Maximoff, Quicksilver, the man behind the Decimation of the world’s mutants, finds himself depowered and trapped in a prison cell, where he must confront all the demons of his past.

This bind was another tough call on where to break the volume. I decided to end it with issue 50 before it goes back to legacy numbering when the next issue is 200. It’s a thin volume.

Volume 4: Breaking Points

As Havok and Polaris take the reins of X-Factor Investigations, the Isolationist makes his chilling return! Then a story arc that will change the face of X-Factor forever! As a rejected Strong Guy does the unthinkable, two characters whom you never thought would come face-to-face are finally reunited. Discovering a long-buried secret from the past, one member of X-Factor will be driven insane as, devastated by the recent tragedies befalling the team, another makes a terrible sacrifice in hopes of making things right. And when the smoke clears, X-Factor’s roster will be nearly halved. The Hell on Earth War begins! The various Lords of Hell battle for dominance in a vicious, mystical war triggered by the seven billionth soul born on Earth, and only X-Factor can prevent the entire world from going up in flames! But as X-Factor struggles to stop the Lords of Hell from tearing the Earth apart, familiar faces will return. As Wolfsbane makes a life-changing decision, one of X-Factor’s longest-held secrets is revealed: the truth about Longshot and Shatterstar! Plus sibling rivalry erupts between Polaris and Quicksilver and it’s time to lock the doors and turn off the lights, as Jamie Madrox’s detective agency shuts down for good. Bid a fond farewell to Layla Miller, Strong Guy, M, Rictor and the rest. Believe it or not, it’s the end of X-Factor!

I decided to go back and add Uncanny Avengers (2015.2) (as well as some Marvel #1000 single page stories). Mainly because we get the conclusion to the Red Skull story arc started in the previous volume of Uncanny Avengers (2012). I did leave out issues 7 and 8 as they tie directly into the Stand Off Avengers event (map coming soon).

Volume 101: The Extraordinary Age

Staring down the threat of extinction once more, veteran X-Man Storm pulls together the team she’ll need to ensure her race’s survival. Together, these EXTRAORDINARY X-MEN will struggle with the familiar burden of being hated and feared, while facing threats the likes of which they’ve never seen. Then the All-New X-Men continue to chart their own path through a world that hates and fears them! And they live in the shadow of their fate – especially Cyclops, whose adult self’s actions are notorious. But together, can these young mutants change their destiny?

With mutantkind in extinction’s crosshairs once more, Magneto leads a group of the deadliest that homo superior has to offer to fight for the fate of their species! Refusing to accept even one more mutant death, the most ruthless possessors of the X-gene on Earth -deadly warriors such as Sabretooth, Fantomex, Mystique and Psylocke -have banded together to proactively mow down their enemies. But with a team populated by killers, can they stay away from each other’s throats long enough to take down their targets?

X-23 was created to be a weapon and, for a time, that’s all she was. But with the help of her mentor, Logan – the original Wolverine -she escaped that dark past. Now the man she knew has fallen, but Laura will honor his memory as the All-New Wolverine. But with the famous cowl comes a world of misery and mystery…like the devastating secret of the Four Sisters.

Volume 102: The Apocalypse Wars

X-Men face the assault by Apocalypse and fight to survive on three different fronts: the past, present and future! In ALL-NEW X-MEN, the young team strives to evade the legacies left to them by their older counterparts, but can they ever truly change their fate? Their future faces peril as they get sucked into the Apocalypse Wars, and of course, no one feels the effects more than Evan Sabahnur, AKA Genesis, AKA Kid Apocalypse. Then in EXTRAORDINARY X-MEN, the team makes a desperate gamble in an attempt to ensure their future-by jumping right to it! But as their last hope for survival hurls into the time stream, they learn that it’s fallen into the hands of one of their deadliest enemies: Apocalypse. And in UNCANNY X-MEN, Psylocke decides to figure out the source of Archangel’s attitude change. But in her investigation to learn the truth of what happened to Archangel, she uncovers more than she bargained for.

Logan is an Old Man on a mission! Given a second chance, he’s determined to put right what went wrong in the reality he knew: the night the villains joined forces and overcame the world’s heroes, changing his life forever. Logan lost his friends, his purpose, and all that was left was the Wasteland. Now he’s back in the past, and perhaps the Villain Uprising can be prevented. But his bid to defy destiny is about to land him in trouble – deep trouble. Logan wakes up at the bottom of a well, and every time he tries to scale its walls, a mysterious figure from his future appears and riddles him with arrows. Can Logan escape his prison -and spare the world from a fate worse than death?

The Terrigen Mists circle the globe…but while they are the source of the Inhumans’ power, they are simultaneously whittling down mutantkind’s numbers and suppressing any new Mutant manifestations. Driven into a cold war, the Inhumans and Mutants know that someday, there must come a reckoning. But when a new Inhuman with the power to change the course of history emerges, there are Mutants who believe the end of their race is nigh…and are willing to do anything to prevent that end from coming.

Then WOLVERINE…MURDERER?! Laura has fought so hard to be something other than what she was created to be, but the fight is over. In the wake of an unspeakable tragedy, dark forces seemingly have Laura’s life under their control. Will Laura be able to defeat demons on the outside and within? Or will she be forced to give up the hero’s life she’s built for herself?

Finally the most uncanny team of X-Men yet continue to fight for homo superior! But someone is weaponizing mutants and turning them loose on the enemies of mutantkind. How will the X-Men react? Meanwhile, Magneto’s uneasy allies discover that the master of magnetism has not been altogether forthcoming about the means he’s been employing to protect his race. To find out what exactly he has been up to, the X-Men investigate and the trail starts at the all-new, all-different Hellfire Club!

What happened eight months ago that set the Inhumans and X-Men on a collision course? Find out here! The Inhumans travel to Japan where one of the Terrigen Clouds creates a shocking new Inhuman. The X-Men travel to Muir Island where the second Terrigen Cloud causes something truly terrible. When these two events collide a war of catastrophic proportions explodes!

More than ever, hatred and fear has made the world a dangerous place for mutants. Since the discovery that the Terrigen Mists, (the key to unlocking an Inhuman’s hidden potential and powers), are LETHAL to mutants, the X-MEN and INHUMANS have been locked in a cold war. But the X-Men have just learned that the Terrigen Mist has reached an irreversible saturation point. Earth is on the verge of being rendered uninhabitable to their kind. And now they see no other option than to strike against the Inhumans to ensure their own survival. It all begins with one choice, and the world will never be the same!

As Bishop searches for his missing sister Shard he finds a trail of destruction that eventually hurls him into the future! Finding himself in a strange and unfamiliar place, our hero discovers that Earth is now a place that resembles the middle ages: primitive villages and clans have replaced cities, the fight for survival has replaced law and order… civiliziation as we know it has fallen! Alone and confused, Bishop must stop the man that has brought him here before the madman claims the entire world as his own!

Then the Cajun rages on! Join Gambit on a time-tossed trip to the 19th century, and discover how the Thieves Guild was shaped by Candra…and Mr. Sinister! Back in the present, Remy needs help and Rogue flies to his aid! Magneto rules Genosha! But with his powers on the fritz he must depend on Polaris to help him forge it into a new mutant utopia. There isn’t a line he’ll cross to make his dream a reality but it may include him taking on the Avengers!

The X-Men have just averted the Age of Apocalypse, but the threat of Onslaught looms right around the corner – a villain so powerful he put the unstoppable Juggernaut into a coma! But before the X-Men can learn more about this shadowy foe, they must face Gene Nation, led by the vicious Marrow and help Magneto’s Acolytes battle Apocalypse’s son, Holocaust, who escaped the AoA into the Marvel Universe! Plus: How will the world react when the Legacy virus’ existence is made public? Can Rogue handle learning Gambit’s greatest secret? And did Sabretooth’s brain damage truly change his personality, or is he a time bomb waiting to go off? And what decades-old connection does Professor X have with the secretive Clan Destine? When Synraith returns, the two teams clash but all is not what it seems! Can the X-Men solve the mystery before Synraith’s victory is complete?

Onslaught is coming! But first, the X-Men must survive his herald, the punishing and powerful Post! Stolen from the Mansion in the middle of the middle of the night the X-Men must defeat Post while in their pajamas?

Some time ago the mad Mikhail Rasputin swept the Morlocks away into a harsh realm where time ran much faster than normal. There, the next generation of Morlock children came of age, hard and cold and bitter. They returned as a terrorist unit called Gene Nation, and Storm nearly had to slay their leader. Now adducted into Mikhail’s brutal dimension Storm must prevail against the living reminders of her failure to lead the Morlocks!

Then to save a trainful of commuters from Mr. Sinister’s explosive experiments Gambit, Bishop and Beast risk life and limb! As if that was not bad enough the X-Men have reached the end of the road to Onslaught but have all their trials been enough to prepare them for the mysterious villain’s imminent assault?

A rogue government strike force, backed by powerful international forces and led by the mystery man known only as Bastion, has launched a massive strike against the X-Men. Jubilee and Professor X are already Bastion’s captives, and now Operation: Zero Tolerance and its insidious new Prime Sentinels have overrun the X-Mansion and imprisoned half the X-Men, leaving Iceman to fend for himself on the streets of New York! Cable and the X-Men must fight a war on many fronts but it’s a war they’re losing. Can even the arrival of Marrow, Maggott and Cecilia Reyes turn the tide? Or will this be the X-Men’s darkest hour? For years, they’ve loved each other from a safe distance. Now Rogue and Gambit will become closer than ever and it may shatter their lives permanently! For when Remy LeBeau’s past actions are revealed, he’ll be put on trial but who will serve as judge, jury and executioner?
