The Krakoa era of X-Men, spearheaded by Jonathan Hickman.

Also known as the Jonathan Hickman era, this map incorporates every X-series between 2019 and 2024. The spine of this map are the oversized hardcovers collecting the major events, with the custom volumes created from the compendium TPB series (Dawn of X, Reign of X, and Trials of X). In many places, covers share pages with story or text pages from other issues. When I have needed to split those up, I have found cover images and reprinted those, opting not to do any scan-and-prints for actual story pages.

Unfortunately, Marvel ended the compendium trades after “Trials of X”, so I switched to a mix of individual series trades and single issues for the “Destiny of X” era and then single issues for “Fall of X” and beyond.

I heavily referenced the Way of X blog when putting the map together to determine best chronological order, and the “Arguments” section of that site will explain a lot of issue placements. Some issue placements have been determined by how the issues were reprinted in the “… of X” trades to minimize “scan-and-print” efforts.

This volume contains issues from Dawn of X volumes 1-7 and 9-11, as well as the X-Men/Fantastic Four TPB. There is a one page story from Marvel Comics #1000 featuring Apocalypse that I included, and used it as the back side of one of the text pages or covers that I needed to print out. The reason that the New Mutants issues skip around is that the focus of the book was split – half of the team was in space in issues by Jonathan Hickman, while the other half was still on Earth in issues by Ed Brisson.

X-Men #9

Secrets of X: Sabretooth
Sabretooth #1-5
Sabretooth and the Exiles #1-5

X Lives/Death of Wolverine is supposed to be the cap of the Reign/Trials era and launch Destiny of X. But there were still a few issues with some lingering threads, including the Sabretooth mini-series that chronicles events covering the entire Krakoa era. These interlude volumes are for issues that fall between the cracks before Destiny of X. Some of the issues were included in Trials of X Volumes 10-12, but many others came from single issues or other TPBs.

Destiny of X volume 1
Immortal X-Men #1-3
Legion of X #1-3
X-Men Red #1-3
Legion of X #4-5
Knights of X #1-5

Since Marvel cancelled the compendium trades, I switched to individual series TPBs to collect this era with a few single issues to round the project out. It also helped that most of the series started getting a lot more self-contained, allowing for chunks of issues to be mapped together.

Destiny of X volume 2
Marvel Voices: Pride (Somnus story)
Marauders Annual #1
Marauders #1-4
X-Men #10-12
X-Men Red #4
Marauders #5
Immortal X-Men #4
A.X.E. Eve of Judgment #1

The Voices story was included at the end of the Marauders TPB (although it takes place first), which is why I ended up including it here. That story does share a story page with the final page of Marauders #5, which marks the only time I did scan-and-print on story pages in this project.

Destiny of X volume 3: Judgment Day
Free Comic Book Day 2022: Avengers/X-Men (first story)
A.X.E. Judgment Day #1
Immortal X-Men #5
X-Men Red #5
A.X.E. Judgment Day #2
A.X.E. Death to the Mutants #1
A.X.E. Death to the Mutants #3
A.X.E. Starfox #1
A.X.E. Avengers #1
A.X.E. X-Men #1
A.X.E. Eternals #1
A.X.E. Judgment Day #6
A.X.E. Judgment Day Omega

Since this crossover occurred so early in the era, it didn’t make sense to break up “Destiny of X” and use an alternate title for the majority of the volumes in the era. I also didn’t trust Marvel to map the omnibus to my liking.

Destiny of X volume 4
New Mutants #25-33
New Mutants: Lethal Legion #1-5
X-Terminators #1-5

New Mutants #25-28 has to take place before Dark Web and X-Terminators #1-5 has to take place before X-Men #18. Otherwise, there’s probably several options for how to map the issues after Judgment Day.

Destiny of X volume 5
X-Force #30-31
Wolverine #24-25
X-Force #32-33
X-Men Annual #1
X-Men #16-18
Dark Web #1
Dark Web: X-Men #1-3
Dark Web: Dawn #1

The X-Force and Wolverine issues are technically Judgment Day tie-ins, but they span the entire event. I opted to group them together afterwards instead of spacing them out within the Judgment Day volume. As I was putting the map together, I really liked the idea of a volume of side stories (being the New Mutants and X-Terminators issues in volume 4). However, since those stories all needed to come before the X-Men and Dark Web issues, X-Force and Wolverine got pushed to volume 5. None of the other tie-ins to Dark Web are required for the X-Men storyline.

Destiny of X volume 6
Captain Marvel #43-46
X-Men #19-21
Captain Marvel #47-49
Invincible Iron Man #1-6 (651-656)

These Iron Man issues are the beginning of Duggan’s run, which becomes part of Fall of X later on.

Iron Man #7 (657)
Before the Fall: Sinister Four #1
Immortal X-Men #12-13
X-Men #24

Starting with Fall of X, I switched to single issues for binding.

Fall of X volume 1
Free Comic Book Day 2023: Uncanny Avengers (both stories)
Hellfire Gala: Fall of X #1
X-Men Blue: Origins #1
Uncanny Spider-Man #5
Astonishing Iceman #1-5
Dark X-Men #1-5
Realm of X #1-4

X-Men Blue: Origins #1 actually takes place a few pages before the end of Uncanny Spider-Man #4, and could be easily spliced in (at least with single issues). Look for the page in #4 with “AND THEY DO” in large letters. Most of these issues are side adventures and don’t intersect with the main storyline too much, although the Alpha Flight mini does need to be read before X-Force #47.

Fall of X volume 3
Ghost Rider/Wolverine: Weapons of Vengeance – Alpha
Ghost Rider #17
Wolverine #36
Ghost Rider/Wolverine: Weapons of Vengeance – Omega
X-Force #44-46
Wolverine #37-40
X-Force #47-50
Wolverine #41-50

I’m only including the main story from Wolverine #50 here. The Larry Hama backup is from an earlier era, and the Percy backup will be included as an epilogue in the final volume.

Fall of X volume 4
Uncanny Avengers #1-5
X-Men #26
Iron Man #10-12 (660-662)
X-Men #27-29
X-Men Red #14-18
Cable #1-4

Twilight of X volume 1
Iron Man #13-14 (663-664)
X-Men #30
Fall of the House of X #1
X-Men #31
Avengers #12-13 (778-779)
Iron Man #15-16 (665-666)
Fall of the House of X #2
X-Men #32
Fall of the House of X #3
X-Men #33
Resurrection of Magneto #1-4
Iron Man #17-18 (667-668)

Technically, Avengers #12-13 are supposed to go in the middle of Iron Man #15, but it’s not a good splice. I believe this order is best for pacing. Also, the last few pages of Avengers #13 can be skipped as they take place after the entire event and lead into another Marvel event crossover.

Twilight of X volume 2
Rise of the Powers of X #1
Dead X-Men #1-2
Rise of the Powers of X #2
X-Men #35 (Uncanny X-Men #700 – main story only)
Wolverine #50 (back-up)

There are a few back-up features in Uncanny X-Men #700. Some lead into the next era of X-Men and could be saved for the beginning of the next volume.

For those keeping count, we have 31 volumes in this map (25 custom volumes and 6 oversized hardcovers).

Warren Ellis’ run on Excalibur is fairly simple. Twenty-one issues of the main series, a 3 issue spin off mini, and 1 crossover issue, with no annuals or specials. There is a Starjammers mini that is supposed to spin out of one of the early arcs, but doesn’t actually involve Excalibur.

It can be difficult to place this run into a larger X-Men collection, since the first four issues are pre-Age of Apocalypse. I don’t recommend trying to force the X-Calibre series in between #86 and 87, as it obviously doesn’t contribute to the rest of the run.

I skipped the X-Men Prime material, since I had already bound that issue as part of my X-Men collection (and thus could not scan relevant pages), and did not want to buy a new copy for just a few pages. It wasn’t written by Ellis anyway.

For extras, I added scans of cards from the 1994 Marvel Masterpieces and 1995 and 1996 Fleer Ultra X-Men sets featuring the Excalibur characters that appear in this run. After taking out ads and back covers, I got a book that’s about an inch and a half thick.

If you care about that sort of thing, issues #83-86 each come in Deluxe (glossy) and regular (non-glossy) editions.

I became a fan of Captain Britain during the 80′s in the pages of the early issues of Excalibur, and subsequently sought out the TPB of his 2nd Marvel UK series. The character is really brought to life by Alan Davis work, and I have grown to be a huge fan of everything he draws. The X-Men archives material reprints Davis first work on the Captain, and the bulk of it is written by the famous scribe, Alan Moore.

Starting with the launches of New X-Men and X-Treme X-Men, and running through Messiah Complex

Continuing from these maps:
Uncanny X-Men #94-280
X-Men 1991-1994
X-Men 1995-2001

During this era, the focus has shifted more to actual TPBs, so this is almost more of a reading list more than binding map. When I was deciding to bind, I discovered that it was actually more cost effective to buy the official versions. Also during this time, writing got more arc-centric and each series started developing its own tone to the point that mixing them together in big volumes just didn’t work out as well. Plus, there are several spans of time where Marvel went completely overboard with ads, without at least giving us the courtesy of putting them back to back for easy removal. The official Marvel releases are marked with (TPB) or (HC). Most X-Treme X-Men books in this list aren’t TPBs, though, because Marvel did a bad job of keeping that series in the proper order, especially with the side projects (minis and one-shots).

This list does contain complete maps for X-Treme X-Men, Morrison’s New X-Men and Excalibur (volume 2). It also includes the complete Austen run, and Claremont’s third run.

Some of the books could probably slide around.

Destiny Quest
X-Treme X-Men #1-4
Savage Land #1-4

(I originally wanted to separate both of these stories, and put Savage Land after New X-Men started, due to Beast and his physical appearance. But then I decided it wasn’ t worth the hassle. Marvel put XXM #1-9 together in one trade, which doesn’t work, because the Savage Land mini has to go between 4 and 5.)

E is For Extinction (TPB)
New X-Men #114-117
New X-Men Annual 2001

Poptopia (TPB)
UXM #394-399

The Godfather
XXM #5-9
XXM Annual 2001

(I got the XXM: Prisoner of Fire trade which reprinted the 2001 annual, ripped it apart, put the annual here in its proper place, and rebound the rest of the trade.)

Rocktopia
UXM Annual 2001
UXM #400-409

(The problem with the 2001 annuals is that they were done in the sideways “Marvelscope” format. Nifty idea, but bad for binding. The UXM annual was the only one not reprinted, so here we have to suffer with rotating the book throughout the issue. Since the artists never took advantage of using double paged spreads in this format, you don’t have to worry about splicing pictures in half. Of course, Marvel reprints the entire Casey run, including the annual, in one big TPB after I go to the trouble of binding it.)

Imperial (TPB)
New X-Men #118-126

Invasion
XXM #10-18

Hope (TPB)
UXM #410-415

New Worlds (TPB)
New X-Men #127-133

Dominant Species
UXM #416-420

(For some reason, the trade of this is ridiculously high priced now. So, I’m going to have to bind these.)

Schism
XXM #19
XXM: X-Pose #1-2
XXM #20-24

Holy War (TPB)
UXM #421-427

Mekanix
#1-6

(Another trade that’s hard to find. In fact, the mini itself is hard to find.)

Riot at Xavier’s
New X-Men #134-141

(At this point, I go away from Marvel’s trades. #139-141 continue from Riot, while #142-156 sort of keep up a continuous narrative.)

God Loves, Man Kills II (TPB)
XXM #25-30

The Draco
UXM #428-436

(Not the trade, because the Juggernaut 2-parter needed a place to go, in it’s proper place.)

Intifada
XXM #31-39

(I’d actually recommend the two trades for this one. After binding, I realized that 90% of the right hand pages were all ads.)

She Lies With Angels (TPB)
UXM #437-441

Planet X
New X-Men #142-156

(A lot of people probably don’t like putting two Austen issues here, but not only do they continue directly from the end of Morrison’s last issue, but where else can I put them?)

Prisoner of Fire
XXM #40-46

(As noted above, I actually took the trade apart and rebound with just these issues.)

Excalibur: Forging the Sword
UXM #442-443
Excalibur #1-7

Astonishing X-Men Volume 1 (HC)
Astonishing X-Men #1-12

Day of the Atom
X-Men #157-164

(The trade includes #165, which I prefered to have later on in the chronology.)

The End of History (TPB)
UXM #444-449

Excalibur: The Devil’s Own
Excalibur #8-14

The Cruelest Cut
UXM #450-454
X-Men #165

Golgotha (TPB)
X-Men #166-170

Phoenix Endsong (TPB)
#1-5

On Ice (TPB)
UXM #455-461

Wild at Heart
X-Men #171-175
Black Panther #8
X-Men #176
Black Panther #9

(I was trying to get the two trades for this, but one of them is hard to find. Unfortunately, these issues have a lot of ads.)

—House of M goes here—

House of M: Uncanny X-Men (TPB)
UXM #462-465

(I’m not including this arc in the actual House of M event, because it ties in very loosely and would disrupt the flow of that book.)

Decimation (TPB)
House of M: The Day After
X-Men #177-181

Deadly Genesis (HC)
#1-6

End of Greys (TPB)
UXM #466-471

Blood of Apocalypse
Apocalypse vs. Dracula #1-4
Cable and Deadpool #26-27
X-Men #182-187

The First Foursaken (TPB)
UXM #472-474
UXM Annual #1 (why did they start over with #1?)

Supernovas (TPB)
X-Men #188-193
X-Men Annual #1 (the second Annual #1)
X-Men #194-199

Rise and Fall of Shi’Ar Empire (HC)
UXM #475-486

Phoenix Warsong (TPB)
#1-5

Endangered Species (TPB)
X-Men: Endangered Species #1
back up stories from X-Men #200-204, UXM #488-491, X-Factor #21-24, and New X-Men #40-42

Blinded by the Light (TPB)
X-Men #200-204

The Extremists (TPB)
UXM #487-491

Astonishing X-Men Volume 2 (HC)
AXM #13-24
Giant Size AXM #1

Emperor Vulcan (TPB)
Emperor Vulcan #1-5
