The Johns/Levitz "retroboot" Legion.

After the third version of the Legion launched, Geoff Johns introduced yet another version, and eventually revealed them to be the original Legion, a few years later. While this set of issues will be placed on most bookshelves following the “threeboot”, it pretty much continues from the Classic Era. The two main Legion of Super-Heroes series covered are volume 6 (which started in 2010) and volume 7 (which started in 2011 as part of the New 52).

Volume 1: Legion of Three Worlds (3007-3009)
Justice League of America #8
Justice Society of America #5
Justice League of America #9
Justice Society of America #6
Justice League of America #10
Action Comics #858-864
Final Crisis: Legion of Three Worlds #1-5

Volume 2: The Battle of Brainiac (or Last Stand of New Krypton) (3009-3010)
Adventure Comics #1-4/504-507 ( backups)
Adventure Comics #8/511
Last Stand of New Krypton #1
Supergirl #51
Superman #698
Adventure Comics #9/512
LSoNK #2
Adventure Comics #10/513
Supergirl #52
Superman #699
LSoNK #3
Adventure Comics #11/514

This volume caused a conundrum for me, as I already have a five volume New Krypton set with my Superman collection. There really is no way to condense LSoNK down to just extract the Legion parts. Ultimately, I realized that I already have some double dipping going on in other parts of my collection, especially with the Final Night in the reboot era, and even the Superman and the Legion arc in the previous volume. This volume does allow me a book to just focus on the Legion, and keep reading their adventures straight through. Some people will want to include more of the Mon-El storyline, but I think that will start cluttering up this set.

Volume 3: Secret History (3010-3012)
Legion: Secret Origin #1-6
Adventure Comics #517
Superman: Secret Origin #2
Legion (volume 7) #0
Adventure Comics #12/515
Supergirl Annual #2
Adventure Comics #518-520
Brave and the Bold #33-34
Adventure Comics #516

Except for Adventure #516, all of this volume is flashback stories with no “present day” framing material. I debated as to whether to make it a volume 0 or not, but I think it’s best to start with the team being reintroduced, heading to New Krypton, and then getting a history lesson before continuing with their 31st century adventures. If it were to be a volume 0, then Adventure #516 would need to be moved to one of the surrounding volumes.

Volume 4: Choices (3010-3011)
Legion (volume 6) #1-6
Legion (volume 6) Annual #1
Legion (volume 6) #7
Adventure Comics #521
Legion (volume 6) #8
Adventure Comics #522
Legion (volume 6) #9-10
Legion of Super Villains #1
Legion (volume 6) #11-16
Adventure Comics #523-529

Starting with #521, Adventure Comics started telling stories concurrent with the Legion series. I determined that the best reading order for #521-522 was in publication order, while the Legion Academy arc that started in #523 fit best at the end. The Annual is moved a little prior to publication, due to some character continuity, namely the leadership of the Legion and Dawnstar.

Volume 5: The Last Stand (or Long Live the Legion) (3011-3013)
Legion (volume 7) #1-23

I did not see a need to follow the adventures of the team stranded in the 21st century in the Legion Lost series.

The Five Years Later version of the Legion of Super-Heroes.

Also known as “Five Years Later” or “TMK” (based on the writers), this permutation of the Legion of Super-Heroes continues on from the Levitz run, but has since been retconned out of existence in several ways. Obviously, the first was Zero Hour, which literally wiped it out and replaced it, but also when the “original” Legion was brought back circa 2008 as a continuation of the Levitz run. I called this era the Glorithverse based on the timeline being rewritten early in the run.

One major difference is that the years that correspond to these volumes are not just current year plus 1000, as they are in other eras. It starts off as current year plus 1005, but then the timeline pretty much stays within two calendar years.

Volume 1 – Five Years Later (2994)
Legion of Super-Heroes (volume 4) #1-12
Legion of Super-Heroes (volume 4) Annual #1

Volume 2 – Quiet Darkness (2994-2995)
Legion of Super-Heroes (volume 4) #13-25
Legion of Super-Heroes (volume 4) Annual #2

Volume 3 – Terra Mosaic (2995)
Legion of Super-Heroes (volume 4) #26-30
Legion of Super-Heroes (volume 4) Annual #3
Legion of Super-Heroes (volume 4) #31-41

Volume 4 – Baptism by Fire (2995)
Legionnaires #1-15

There is no crossover between Legionnaires and the main series while the Bierbaums are still writing.

Volume 5 – Time’s Change (2995)
Legion of Super-Heroes (volume 4) #42-59

This is sort of a catch all volume that gets the end of the Bierbaum run, and the beginning of the McCraw run, leading up to the Zero Hour changes.

Volume 6 – End of an Era (2995)
Valor #11-21
Legionnaires #16-17
Valor #22
Legion of Super-Heroes (volume 4) #60
Legionnaires #18
Valor #23
Legion of Super-Heroes (volume 4) #61

Issue #54 opens with a text recap page, but whoever designed the page decided to use a dark gold text on a starry space background, thereby rendering the text nearly unreadable. (Thank you, “kewl!” 90s design.) The full text of that page is as follows:

In the 30th Century, an idealistic group of young people from throughout the galaxy came together to form the Legion of Super-Heroes. Their goals were simple, to protect the galaxy and to insure a peaceful coexistence for its inhabitants. The Legion was often successful in fulfilling these goals, gaining well deserved fame and respect during its long history. The ranks of the Legion grew and changed as new members joined and some longtime members departed. Many times those who left the team returned, for the Legion had become such an integral part of their lives that nothing could take its place.

Over the years, the Legion faced many callenges, defeated many evils and fought many villains who sought to rule the universe. More than once, members sacrificed their lives in order to preserve their oath of justice.

Now, having barely defeated one of their mightiest enemies, they are accused of crimes that oppose everything they stand for. The Legion must remain strong as they face the greatest challenge of all time . . .

A multi-volume set covering Paul Levitz's more famous run that ran primarily in the mid-80s Baxter series.

After working on the Legion reboot, I wanted to work backwards, but knew that the odds of going all the way back to the beginning was rather slim, so I started breaking it up into smaller eras. If I go any farther back, I will use the Archives, and continue from there.

This run, which is the second and more famous run by Paul Levitz, started in Legion of Super-Heroes (volume two), which is the series that continued from Superboy and Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes. In 1984, that series became Tales of the Legion of Super-Heroes, as Legion of Super-Heroes (volume three) was launched. Tales ran new stories for a year before it started reprinted volume 3. Unlike it’s counterpart in the New Teen Titans franchise, Tales of the LOSH stories took place concurrently with the relaunched Baxter series (so named due to the type of paper it was printed on.) Do not be confused by the last page of #325, which was a glorified ad to hype up the beginning of the reprints coming in the following issue.

Volume 1 – The Future is Forever
Legion (volume 2) #284-289
Legion Annual #1
Legion (volume 2) #290-300
DC Comics Presents #59
Legion (volume 2) #301-303
Legion Annual #2
Legion (volume 2) #304-313
Tales of the Legion #314-315
Tales of the Legion #314-316 (backups)

I used the Great Darkness Saga and The Curse TPBs published in 2014, only having to insert the DCP and Tales issues. This allowed for a thinner book with better paper. If I were binding the originals, this would likely get split up into two volumes. Annual #3 is moved to its proper place in the next volume. DC Comics Presents #43 is a teamup written by Levitz that goes near the beginning of this run, but I have opted to skip it for now. If I bind the era before this, it will go there.

Volume 2 – Shadows of the Past
Legion (volume 3) #1-2
Legion (volume 2) Annual #3
Legion (volume 3) #3
Tales of the Legion #316-317
Legion (volume 3) #4-6
Tales of the Legion #318-319
Legion (volume 3) #7
Tales of the Legion #320
Legion (volume 3) #8
Tales of the Legion #321
DC Comics Presents #80
Legion (volume 3) #9
Tales of the Legion #322-323

Volume 3 – Business Decisions
Legion (volume 3) #10-11
Legion of Substitute Heroes #1
Tales of the Legion #324 (backup)
Tales of the Legion #324-325
Legion (volume 3) #12-15
Legion (volume 3) Annual #1
Legion (volume 3) #16-18
Legionnaires Three #1-4

Volume 4 – New Order
Legion (volume 3) #19-26
Booster Gold #8-9
Legion (volume 3) #27
Legion (volume 3) Annual #2
Legion (volume 3) #28-35

Volume 5 – Trapped by Time
Cosmic Boy #1-4
Legion (volume 3) #36-37
Superman #8
Action Comics #591
Legion (volume 3) #38-39
Legion (volume 3) Annual #3
Legion (volume 3) #40-50

Volume 6 – The Magic Wars

A ten volume set of the Legion relaunch, starting right after Zero Hour. A fairly straightforward map, volume breaks can be moved around to the binder’s discretion. Where I think there will be differences between different collections will be around volumes 3-5, where the team was split between the 20th and 30th centuries. The Final Night mini-series is included because the Legion play a sizable role, but it is not intended to be a comprehensive map of that event. There is a clean split before the DnA run starts in volume 8.
