This volume caused a conundrum for me, as I already have a five volume New Krypton set with my Superman collection.  There really is no way to condense LSoNK down to just extract the Legion parts.  Ultimately, I realized that I already have some double dipping going on in other parts of my collection, especially with the Final Night in the reboot era, and even the Superman and the Legion arc in the previous volume.  This volume does allow me a book to just focus on the Legion, and keep reading their adventures straight through.  Some people will want to include more of the Mon-El storyline, but I think that will start cluttering up this set.

Except for Adventure #516, all of this volume is flashback stories with no “present day” framing material.  I debated as to whether to make it a volume 0 or not, but I think it’s best to start with the team being reintroduced, heading to New Krypton, and then getting a history lesson before continuing with their 31st century adventures.  If it were to be a volume 0, then Adventure #516 would need to be moved to one of the surrounding volumes.

Starting with #521, Adventure Comics started telling stories concurrent with the Legion series.  I determined that the best reading order for #521-522 was in publication order, while the Legion Academy arc that started in #523 fit best at the end.  The Annual is moved a little prior to publication, due to some character continuity, namely the leadership of the Legion and Dawnstar.

Obviously, the first was Zero Hour, which literally wiped it out and replaced it, but also when the “original” Legion was brought back circa 2008 as a continuation of the Levitz run. I called this era the Glorithverse based on the timeline being rewritten early in the run.

One major difference is that the years that correspond to these volumes are not just current year plus 1000, as they are in other eras. It starts off as current year plus 1005, but then the timeline pretty much stays within two calendar years.

If I go any farther back, I will use the Archives, and continue from there.

This run, which is the second and more famous run by Paul Levitz, started in Legion of Super-Heroes (volume two), which is the series that continued from Superboy and Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes. In 1984, that series became Tales of the Legion of Super-Heroes, as Legion of Super-Heroes (volume three) was launched. Tales ran new stories for a year before it started reprinted volume 3. Unlike it’s counterpart in the New Teen Titans franchise, Tales of the LOSH stories took place concurrently with the relaunched Baxter series (so named due to the type of paper it was printed on.) Do not be confused by the last page of #325, which was a glorified ad to hype up the beginning of the reprints coming in the following issue.

I used the Great Darkness Saga and The Curse TPBs published in 2014, only having to insert the DCP and Tales issues. This allowed for a thinner book with better paper. DC Comics Presents #43 is a teamup written by Levitz that goes near the beginning of this run, but I have opted to skip it for now. If I bind the era before this, it will go there.

The Robot6 Blog just posted a bunch of photos from writer/artist Jeff Lemire‘s studio and it turns out he’s had a few books bound. It should come as no surprise that his bound volumes include lots of Legion of Super-Heroes books if you’re familiar with his love of the Superboy character.
