Nobody’s favorite series, but I’m an absolute sucker for B & C-Level teams. Unfortunately, the tail end of the series got sucked up into The Crossing, a uh, truly classic Marvel crossover, but for this map, it’s kept to a minimum. There are a few artist rotations throughout, but at least Abnett & Lanning stay on for the whole run.

Force Works:

Avengers West Coast 102
Force Works Ashcan (see notes below)
Force Works 1–5
Marvel Comics Presents 169–170 (“In the Hands of the Mandarin”, Parts 1 & 2)
Force Works 6
Marvel Comics Presents 169 (“Century”)
Marvel Comics Presents 170 (“Suzi”)
War Machine 9
Marvel Comics Presents 171 (“War Machine”/”Recorder”)
Iron Man 311
Force Works 7
Marvel Comics Presents 172 (“US Agent”/”Scarlet Witch”)
War Machine 10
Iron Man 312
Force Works 8–12
War Machine 15 (“Brothers in Arms”, Part 2)
Iron Man 317 (“Brothers in Arms”, Part 3)
Force Works 13–18
Century: Distant Sons
Force Works 19
War Machine 22
Force Works 20–22

—————-
Notes:

You could always just start with FW #1, but that last issue of AWC is also written by Abnett & Lanning and does a good job of setting up FW.

The undersized Force Works Ashcan comic poses a bit of a problem, as 1) it’s a good 1/4 smaller in size than a regular comic and 2) it’s a mix of prequel and teaser for the upcoming series. The story in the ashcan actually takes place during FW #1, but you really can’t slip it in there without throwing everything off. I plan on creating a pocket for the ashcan on the inside back cover I can slip it into, but I’ve seen it simply bound before FW #1.

FW #19->WM #22->FW #20 is one long story beat, so not including WM there would make for pretty choppy reading.

If you choose to include the “Brothers in Arms” backup story arc, you will need to get a hold of two copies of FW #12, as the last page of the main story and of the backup share the same page (due to it being a flip book).

Extras to include: Cover and interview from Marvel Age #132, and the Iron Man & Force Works Collectors Preview, which is actually pretty substantial.

Generation X: A (mostly) great series, with Chris Bachalo doing some of the best art of his career. I’ve always had a soft spot for GenX, since it was just starting up when I really got into comics, and that chromium wrap-around cover to #1 was the coolest thing ever. This is the whole run in 5 pretty equal-sized volumes, broken up by creative team.

Volume 1: Lobdell/Bachalo Part 1

Phalanx Covenant:
Uncanny 316
X-Men 36
Uncanny 317
X-Men 37

(Be sure to grab the non-Deluxe versions of the Phalanx issues, so as to avoid the heavy cardstock covers, and the inner page paper is exactly the same in both.)

Uncanny 318 (“Moving Day”) (Generation X prelude)
Generation X 1–4
Generation Next 1–4 (Age of Apocalypse) (I say include it: Bachalo’s art throughout is just too good to skip, and it’s a good story.)
Generation X 5–9
Generation X Annual ’95 (Mondo joins the school)
Generation X 10–11
Generation X Collector’s Preview

Volume 2: Lobdell/Bachalo Part 2

Generation X: Overstreet Fan Edition (easily found in the X-Men: Rarities TPB)
Generation X 12–21
Generation X Annual ’96
Generation X 22–28
Generation X -1
Generation X 29–31

Volume 3: Hama/Dodson

Generation X Annual ’97
Generation X 32–41
Generation X ½
Generation X 42–47
Generation X Annual ’98
Generation X Holiday Special

Volume 4: Faerber/Dodson

Generation X 48–50
X-Man 50
Generation X 51–58
Generation X Annual ’99
Generation X 59–62
(this volume contains 4 double-sized issues so while the map looks small, it might be the thickest by a nose)

Volume 5: Ellis/Wood/Pugh

Generation X 63–75
Generation X Underground Special
X-Men Unlimited 30 (“Banshee’s Angels” — Underground Special sequel, and in full color!)
Gen 13/Generation X
Generation X/Gen 13 (sequel to the prior)
Generation Hex (Amalgam)

For completists, one could always add X-Force 42 after Generation X #3, and Wolverine 94 after #9, but I didn’t think they really added much. There’s also Marvel Team-Up #1 (1997) “Starring Generation X!”, but I thought it was only OK. I would put it right at the beginning of Vol. 3 if I had to, though.

FYI, if you’re one of those adverse to unnecessary annuals, the only ones that need to be included are Annuals ’95 and ’99. They’re both written by the then current writer, and are major parts of their storylines.

The War of Kings has ended and once again the Cosmic Universe is left in disarray. A huge rift has been blown in space and time. Both the Shi’ar and Kree Empires have suffered severe casualties and yet are forced to maintain diplomatic pleasantries. As both great powers are at their weakest another Cosmic War emerges that threatens to destroy the universe. The threads of fate begin to intertwine as the Guardians of the Galaxy, Nova, the Imperial Guard and the Inhumans find themselves racing unknowingly towards the same destination.

I took a real precaution as not to spoil or reveal the title of The Thanos Imperative. Following this map the reader will be fully surprised at the reveal.

I collected all the issues bearing the ‘Disassembled’ banner which would lead up to the Avengers being… disassembled. The Spider-Man and Fantastic Four do not tie in to the Avengers storyline, but I included them here not only for completeness sake, but also because it seems the whole Marvel Universe would be affected by the outcome of this event. I had these bound in 2 volumes.

The mutant misfits duo were an early favorite of mine, so I want to revisit their early adventures after I bind their appearances in 2 volumes.

Vol.1 (17 issues)

Spectacular Spider-Man 64, 69, 70, 81, 82
Cloak and Dagger (1983) 1–4
Marvel Team-Up Annual 6
Spectacular Spider-Man 94–96
Power Pack 6–8
Marvel Fanfare 19

Vol.2 (17 issues)

New Mutants 23–25
Cloak and Dagger (1985) 1–4
Power Pack 25-26
Cloak and Dagger (1985) 6–11

After this, Cloak and Dagger shared billing with Doctor Strange in Strange Tales 1-19 before getting their own series again in The Mutant Misadventures of Cloak and Dagger 1-19.

Set in the 'hidden years' between X-Men #66 and X-Men Giant-Size #1, this popular series by John Byrne was a favourite with X-Men fans before it was dropped after 22 issues.

The X-Men Masterworks volumes 7 and 8 covers the intervening years between the X-Men 66 and Giant-Size X-Men 1. But in recent years we’ve had new ‘hidden’ stories that takes place in the same period. In preparing my Hidden Years collection of 22 issues plus the back-up from X-Men 94, for me personally this was too big a bind for me as I like to limit my binds to no more than 20 issues per volume. So I decided to split the series in half, but still needed to beef up the volumes to a nice size.

So what to include with the John Byrne X-Men Hidden Years run? The latter issues were based on the story in Fantastic Four 102-104, so I included the original issues of those. I managed to find other new ‘hidden years’ stories and decided to include those. These are X-Men and Spider-Man 1, the first part of a 4 part series that features Kraven the Hunter; Fantastic Four World’s Greatest Comics 3 and 4 that features the X-Men and sentinels; Spider-Man Family 8 that features an Iceman story, and 9 that features a Marvel Girl story. If anybody know of any other new ‘hidden years’ stories that take place between X-Men 66 and Giant-Size X-Men 1, please let us know.

So for now, my map looks like this:

Vol.1 (16 issues)

X-Men and Spider-Man 1
Fantastic Four: World’s Greatest Comics Magazine 3, 4
Spider-Man Family 8, 9
WildCATS / X-Men: The Silver Age 1
X-Men (1991) 94 (backup)
X-Men: The Hidden Years 1–9

Vol.2 (16 issues)

X-Men: The Hidden Years 10–22
Fantastic Four 102-104
