Kurt Busiek’s creator-owned series is fairly straightforward, although there are probably some variations with the material that was published around the Dark Age series. I have chosen to group all of the “present day” material together prior to the Dark Age.

I originally planned to keep having about 20 issues per volume going into the Vertigo series, with breakpoints after issues #21 and #41 (the “100th” issue), but then the series was announced to end at #52 before switching to an OGN format. I didn’t want to combine the series with the OGNs for various reasons mostly to do with the erratic scheduling. There were three options — have volume 6 only be 11 issues, reconfigure the three volumes to be shorter than 20 issues, or condense into two volumes of 26 issues each. As it turns out, #26 was the 20th anniversary issue and makes for a good breakpoint. I can deal with the slightly larger volumes.
Also note that #33 contains a printing error on page 3, as the lettering was all shifted down and some dialogue was left off the page. The error was corrected for the digital and TPB versions of the issue.
